What is the Student Conferenceship Award?

ACSA is pleased to announce the availability of conferenceships enabling students to attend the Annual Computer Security Applications Conference (ACSAC). The goal of a Student Conferenceship Award is to support students who would not normally be able to attend the conference. Although merit is one of the factors considered, students should not view a Conferenceship as a pure merit award. In particular, students are encouraged to pursue other sponsorship. Our goal is to enable the largest number possible of students to attend ACSAC, which will only be possible with the collaboration of the students in requesting a Conferenceship only for those items that cannot be funded by other sources.

Who Should Apply

Conferenceships can be requested by full-time undergraduate or graduate students at an accredited university or school and will be awarded to students that will get the most from ACSAC. Conferenceship awards will normally take the form of a reimbursement to be applied against conference registration and travel/lodging expenses. Our intent is to help as many students as possible based on need.

How to Apply

Students should provide:

Current CV
A one-page narrative that discusses your background in information security, why you are interested in the field, relevant areas of interest, the type of career you plan on pursuing, what you expect in attending ACSAC, and any other information you think makes you an appropriate candidate for the Conferenceship. Optionally, include a statement if you are a member of an under-represented minority group, including women.
A letter of recommendation from research adviser/faculty member confirming that the student is in good standing. It should include a justification of financial need.

Additional Information

If you are chosen for a Conferenceship, you are encouraged to fully participate in the conference (e.g., attend both workshops/tutorials and technical sessions).

Note that ACSAC Student Conferenceships work on a reimbursement basis; i.e., you (the student) pays for the travel, hotel, etc., and then at or shortly after the conference, you are reimbursed for the approved expense. If this is a significant problem, please include a note with your application explaining the circumstances.

In order to accommodate as many students as possible, ACSAC policy states that Student Conferenceship recipients should share hotel rooms. ACSAC has decided to handle this by giving you one of two options: (1) Share a room with another student, or (2) If you choose not to share a room, ACSAC will only be able to reimburse half the cost of your room. Please take this into consideration when calculating your expected expenses.
